After discussion with their customers a global engineering company identified the need for a hemodialysis solution that delivered improved sanitation, less complexity and reduced maintenance requirement. The ideal solution would simplify the dialysis machine to a level that would make it suitable for home or self care applications.
A solution delivering the desired benefits required an approach that is a significant departure from that taken with current dialysis machines, where development has been incremental over a number of years. A Rock Ledge Resources Principal led a team developing a novel technology solution, incorporating the fluid paths, traditionally incorporated in a machine, onto a disposable injection molded component, simplifying the machine by removing fluid paths from the dialysis machine. The targeted benefits were improved sanitation, elimination of descaling, significantly simplify the machine, with cost and maintenance benefits.
A novel dialysis technology solution was developed through to concept prototype, giving the desired benefits, demonstrating the performance of the system functional elements. The device was designed to be simpler and smaller to enable home or self care use. A business plan was developed to support fund raising for the development of the device through to Alpha prototype.
