Engaging in one business may require a company to engage in additional other various businesses. Serving the medical needs of an urban community also places a health system in the business of medical education, health care research and many other important but ancillary businesses. Depending on the size of the organization, these ancillary businesses can become very large and complex. Often, senior management has little visibility and understanding of these non-core businesses and their operations. As a result they can be unfocused and suffer from quality lapses, some of which could impair the reputation of the entire health system.
In order to determine where it wants to go, any company must first understand where it is, what the barrier are to where it wants to go, and to develop strategies to overcome these barriers. A Rock Ledge Resources principal was engaged to assist a hospital system in evaluating the medical research activities conducted by the physicians, hospitals and joint ventures within the system. A second project involved a similar analysis for the medical education activities.
The principal delivered a current state assessment of key ancillary business operations, along with a roadmap for growth in identified key programs which served the needs of the hospital system and its community.
